Cochlear Implants

There are many people that are born deaf and there has been no cure for it for a long time until this new device called the cochlear implant.  This is an electronic device that is picks up sound and helps a hearing impaired person hear.  This implant does not make the deaf person have their hearing back, instead it helps them hear sounds in the environment and now the deaf person can try to understand speech and can hear noises around them.
Many people have decided to get this cochlear implant because it has helped many people in the mainstream world.  Now people can read lips easier and can actually sometimes understand what someone is saying.  “According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as of December 2010, approximately 219,000 people worldwide have received implants.  I personally have talked to someone with one of these implants and it was awesome to see.  He was actually my 8th grade teacher.  He tought us sign language and would read our lips.  He could hear if people we talking when he was teaching class so we always had to be quite.  He could talk, but he had a different tone and could not pronounce some words.  It was amazing to see what he could do while being hard-of-hearing.
